Earl Acton
Team Roper & PRCA Gold Card #12202
1939-2007
Earl Acton was born in Alpine, Texas on October 6, 1939, to Ernest William and Preble Steadman Acton of Reeves County. He was born into a ranching and rodeo family. Earl’s dad was a member of the Cowboy’s Turtle Association, the forerunner of the RCA. Ernest also traveled some with the 101 Wild West Show, so rodeo was definitely in Earl’s blood. As soon as Earl walked, he carried a rope and dreamed of team roping with his dad.
Earl graduated from Toyah High School and Sul Ross Normal College. He soon started roping professionally and won the team roping at the West of the Pecos Rodeo in 1971 and competed at Pecos until 1991. He held PRCA Gold Card #12202.
Earl married Pam Jones of Ozona and ranched out of Ozona where they raised their family of twins, Marty (deceased) and Bobbie Renfroe. Bobbie’s children Aaron and Kellie and Aaron’s son, Wyatt Tate, continue to carry on the tradition of the western way of life.
Acton was very respected in the Ozona area and served on several civic organization boards. He also received special recognition from many different committees. Earl passed away on December 24, 2007. Earl Acton was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2016.
