John O. “Jiggs” Barfield competed at the West of the Pecos Rodeo in team tying, team roping, or steer roping from 1953 through 1993.  He was a local contestant, and in 1975, the last team-tying contest held in Pecos was won by Jiggs and his son, Johnny.

          Jiggs was always very involved with the Pecos Rodeo, being on the WotPR Committee from 1975-80, and served as a WotPR Advisor from 1980-95.  Jiggs also served as the Wagon Boss for the West Texas Boys Ranch, he was a member of the Senior Steer Roping Association, a member of the Reeves County Sheriff Posse, and was always a Goodwill Ambassador for the West of the Pecos Rodeo.  Jiggs proudly carried his PRCA Gold Card.

          John O. “Jiggs” Barfield was born on June 8th, 1920 in San Angelo, Texas, and passed away on November 30, 1997, at the age of 77.  He and his wife, Ruby Nell, were life-long ranchers in the West Texas area where they raised their two children, Babs and Johnny.
