Mary Dale “Sis” Miller
Barrel Racer & Calf Roper
1941-1973
Mary Dale Miller was born on June 8, 1941, in Fort Stockton, Texas, and graduated from Pecos High School in 1959 where she was the 4H President.
Sis, as her family and friends called her, began riding horses as a baby at Rustler Springs and started roping and running barrels at 6 or 7 years old. She was known for her gentle kindness to her family and her community.
Sis competed in Fort Stockton before the GRA was started and competed there all of her life. She was an excellent horsewoman and trained two of her own barrel horses. She also won several All-Around Championships. Sis never won the West of the Pecos Rodeo Barrel Races but drew many checks here over the years. After getting her GRA card, Sis competed in cutting horse contests as well as barrel racing and calf roping.
Sis developed heart problems due to having Rheumatic Fever as a child. In Houston, Dr. DeBakey inserted a heart valve, which was very successful. However, she died in 1973 while living in St. Louis, Missouri. Sis was inducted posthumously into the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame.
