Roy started competing in the AJRA where he was named the 1977 Most Outstanding Individual in 25 Years.  He went on to become the National High School Champion, the NIRA Champion (a title his dad won in 1950), and a PRCA Champion.  Roy had the honor of winning Calgary, Pendleton, and Cheyenne in the same year.  He was also the PRCA Rookie of the Year and World Champion in 1976.

Roy holds 8 World Championships which include Tie-down roping in 1976, 1980-84, and steer roping and all-around in 1983.  Cooper is one of only 3 cowboys to be a Triple Crown Winner in Calf Roping, Steer Roping, and PRCA All-Around in 1983.

Cooper first competed at the West of the Pecos Rodeo in 1976 and last competed in 1995. Roy stays very busy hauling his three boys, Clint, Clif, and Tuf to rodeos all over the United States and Canada.  Championship roping runs in the family.

Fellow 2006 TRHoF member, Toots Mansfield said of Roy, “He has perfected the art of roping and tying a calf about as far as it can be perfected.” This reputation earned him the nickname “Super Looper”.
