Sherry was born in Del Rio, Texas, in 1959 to Jim Bob Altizer and Minnie Lee Weathersbee Altizer, the same year her dad won the World Champion Calf Roping title. When Sherry was 18 years old, she was Miss AJRA (American Junior Rodeo Association) and joined the WPRA in 1978, competing in barrels, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, steer undecorating, and team roping. The following four years Sherry qualified for the NIRA Finals.
In 1980 Sherry was Outstanding “Hawk” Cowgirl for Howard County Junior College and the Texas Circuit Finals Champion in 1981. In 1982 Sherry achieved the fastest time in the 1st Go-Round at the CNFR and set an arena record at the Myriad Convention Center in Oklahoma City at the NFR. She was the Sand Hills Rodeo Champion in 1982 and 1983 and qualified for the NFR in 1985.
Sherry was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2023 and will be inducted into the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame on Friday, June 28, 2024.
Sherry won or placed at the West of the Pecos Rodeo in Pecos, TX, Odessa, TX, San Antonio, TX, Monroe, LA, Jackson MS, Helldorado Days in Las Vegas, NV, San Angelo, TX, El Paso, TX, New Orleans, LA, and many other rodeos through the years.
Sherry and her husband, Ben, make their home in Sonora, Texas.
